Chapter 15

SO THERE I WAS, surrounded by monsters and naked women, with my girlfriend by my side and not nearly enough weapons on my person. I took a quick inventory of the room and counted three weres that had lost a ton of money when Greg and I broke up an underground fight club Lilith ran a couple years ago, one wiry little vamp pickpocket with a fetish for knives, a couple of huge enforcers for one of the city’s more notorious human gangs, and six random human thugs with pistols close at hand.

I had my Glock 17 in a holster at the back of my waistband, a KA-BAR strapped to one leg, and a couple of silver stakes in a holster strapped to the inside of one forearm. It didn’t feel like nearly enough, not if I was going to get Sabrina out of there alive. So I did what any right-thinking dead man would do in that situation—I reached out to pull the fire alarm.

A hand closed over my wrist before I got there, and I looked up to see Abby glaring at me. “What the hell do you think you’re doing?” She asked. Her eyes were dark, and the look she gave me was brimming with violence. I knew working at this place had changed her, but it was rare that she let it show exactly how much.

“Causing a diversion so we can get away without destroying the bar, killing a couple of patrons, and quite possibly dying in the process. What are you doing? Have you gotten so loyal to your employer that you’ll let these assholes kill me? And Sabrina?”

“You’re a dick. And a moron. Don’t you even know how to read?” She pointed to a sign over the bar that said SANCTUARY. There were several others around the room, and I remembered the sign at the entrance.

“You mean they actually abide by that?” I asked. In my experience, creatures that fed on humans and thought the world existed only to be their personal playground weren’t too much for the rulebook.

“Would you intentionally piss Lilith off? In her own house?” Abby’s blond hair was teased within an inch of its life, and her “work outfit” involved a lot of tight black leather and boots that could kindly be called “ass-kicking,” but there was nothing sexy in the way she glared at me as she pulled my hand away from the fire alarm. “The Angel is a sanctuary, and everyone knows it. You start a fight in here, Lilith will end it, with extreme prejudice. And maybe end you in the process.”

“I get it, I get it.” I pulled my wrist away from Abby’s grasp. “So we can just walk out of here with no problem, get in our car, and cruise off into the night? If it’s that easy, why did you come back in to check on me?”

“Don’t flatter yourself. I came back in to make sure that Sabrina gets out of here okay. Sanctuary only applies as far as the door, once you’re in the parking lot you’re on your own.
